In the movie/book A Raisin in the Sun A Raisin in the Sun portrays a few weeks in the life of an African-American family, The Youngers, living on the South Side of Chicago in the 1950s. They are about to receive an insurance check for $10,000 from the deceased Mr.Younger. Each adult in the family has what they want to do with the money. The mother, Mama, has a son, Walter Lee, who would rather use the money to invest in a liquor store with his friends. He believes that the investment will solve the family’s financial problems forever. Walter’s wife, Ruth, agrees with Mama, however, and hopes that she and Walter can provide more space and opportunity for their son, Travis. Finally, Beneatha, Walter’s sister and Mama’s daughter, wants to use the money for her medical school tuition. She doesn't want to move into the white neighborhood where her mother and sister-in-law would like to move. Beneatha instead tries to find her identity by looking back to the past and to Africa. In class we watched different scenes of the play.We watched the oldest, older, and the newest one. In the older movie the person that played Walter in this movie is Sidney Poitier. The older movie the person that plays Walter was Danny Glover. In the newest movie the person that played Walter was Sean Combs,P Diddy. In my opinion Sidney Poitier was a better character of Walter.I say this because he understood what it meant and how it felt to be back in those days. He showed really good facial expressions, and he wasn't over exaggerating.
Sidney Poitier was born when the word "nigger" was hurtful. Now people throw it around like they say hello. I saw in the movie that it was hurtful to say "nigger" in the movie. Sidney Poitier was very inspiring and he really showed how it felt to be living back in the 1860s-1950s, he showed the hardship black had to go through. He showed that blacks were treated unequal, and treated like they were dirt. When he acted you could tell that he had a certain connection with each character. When he expressed his self you could tell who his wife, sister, and mother was, he clearly expressed his feeling toward them appropriately. When he took pauses throughout the script they were natural, you couldn't tell that it was scripted. It seemed like an everyday life for him. With him acting it was reality and not just movie.
When Danny Glover acted as if he never had an acting job and he wanted to impress everybody. He over exaggerated every little part he said. He sweats during weird scenes and it doesn't quit belong in that particular scene. He show t much emphasis on thing that don't need emphasis put on it. He yells and scream a little to much, he yells during a sentimental time when he found out that his wife was pregnant and she was going to get rid of the baby. That isn't the right time to be yelling at a women, that is a very bad time to yell. He also yells when he is yelling at his mother, i found that really disrespectful, because when he yelled at her it didn't seem like it was suppose to be there. Danny takes unnatural pauses through out the movie. He pauses too long during sentimental times, I understand that he has to gather himself but when he pauses it is too long and it seems unnatural. Danny Glover unlike Sidney Poitier uses the props well, he lets his audience know what he is talking about and why.
Sean Combs all together isn't a good actor. You can tell that he isn't use to acting. When he speaks he speaks as if it a regular conversation. He doesn't put any emphasis on anything, he just speaks like he is talking to Jay-Z and Beyonce. He showed no gestures or movement to express how he feels. P Diddy didn't really connect with none of the characters like Sidney and Danny. P Diddy has a long way to go to get up to Sidney's level of acting.Unlike Sidney and Danny he doesn't use many gestures he just says everything plain. He is ruder than the other guys. Instead of making the wife feel love and wrong about having the baby he makes her feel like the baby isn't wanted he makes her feel like she did a good job by not having the baby. When he is happy his voice gets really high pitched and obnoxious. He is an annoying actor that is inexperienced.
In conclusion, I must say Danny Glover isn't the worst but he isn't the best. Danny Glover didn't understand his position and how it felt to be in that position. Sidney Poitier was an icon in this movie I could feel the struggle and pain they went through when he was acting out Walter. You might say "So What?",but this movie is a really iconic movie that portrays the African- American struggle in the 1960s. It give you a look and a thought of how it was and how the color of your skin can determine how far in life you go. It also shows how money can almost ruin a family and how you should be proud of who you are and your heritage. It shows that you should never give up on what you dream of and everything is possible. It teaches you life lesson and morals. I can say it will help a person in life if you watch and understand the movie.
