Walter Dean Myers was very aggressive and a quick reader as a child. He has written over 50 fifty books including poetry books and picture books. His poems are about real life situations that has happen in other people's life. He interviews people to get an insight of their lives. He puts everything he learns about that person in a poem. When he writes he makes you feel the mood that person is in.
In the poem Christopher Lomax, 60, Retired Walter Dean Myers title this poem after an older man. In this poem there is an older man who is looking at his daughter and seeing how she is growing into a young lady, and how he spoiled her and made sure everything was okay with her. In the line “Her beauty lies across the moment like the sun, already dipped…..” he uses simile to compare her beauty to the sun and how it’s smooth. He says “Her body bobs and jerks a puppet on a rubber band……..” he is comparing how weak and tired her body is to a string puppet. His speech in this poem is formal. He is talking about a young woman spring into true womanhood. The attitude in this poem is happiness and proud. The poem changes moods when Myers say “As I wipe the tears from mine…….” The mood goes from happy and proud to sad and sorrow. The theme of this poem is fathers see their baby girls bloom into women, and even though you’re grown they will always be there to wipe your tears away.
In the second poem I analyze Sam Dupree, 28, Hustler, Walter Dean Myers named this poem afetr a street hustler. This poem is about a street hustler who doesn't have to work for nothing and everything comes to him, like money, women, and etc. Walter Dean Myers diction in this poem is informal, because a street hustler isn't a sophisticated person. In the line "i conned a shark tight out of his fin", the word conned is a informal way to say bribe. Myers uses the phrase " sweet talk" which is slang for persuading or seduce somebody, he says it in an informal way because hustler are known to "sweet talking women. The attitude in this poem is arrogant. The poem changes moods from calm to cocky in the line " cause they half way out the kitchen....". The theme of this poem is that with confidence you can overcome some problems that insecure people may not be able to.
The third poem is Wille Schockley,23,Street Vendor, Guitar Player. The poem is named after a young man named Willie. This poem is about a man that has just got kicked out of his girlfriend house because he was a liar. Walter Dean Myers uses personification when he says " i used to skip and run after you like lightning" he is saying when he ran he ran fast to her and in a hurry. his speech in this poem is informal. when he says the line " go on, now", that is the informal way of saying leave me alone. The attitude in this poem is sorrow. Willie Schockley is sad that his girl kicked him out the house. The poem changes mood when he said " found my clothes lying on the sidewalk", it changes from tired to sorrow. The theme of this poem is that when you cheat you will have consequences.
In the poem Caroline Fleming,42,Live-In-Maid is about a lady who has sometimes go home to her family happy but she sometimes go home sad. Mr.Myers names the poem after this woman name Caroline Fleming. The attitude in this poem is longing for something. Myers uses personification in the line "With Nerves screeching......" this is personification because nerves can't screech. His speech in the poem is formal, in the line "Tattered life" tattered is an formal way to say destroyed. Myers uses hyperbole when he said " And my inner voice is to small......" because nobodies voice can reach to god ears. The mood changes in the line " The tears too long" from happiness to sadness. The theme of this poem is when you take people from there homes they feel a sense of insecurities.
My final poem Joshua De Grosse,19, Student,City College is about a young man who can't express how he feels through his writings. The poem is named after a young man named Joshua De Grosse. The attitude of this poem is disparity. His language in this poem is formal. In the line "Theses gnarled....." gnarled is a formal to say nibble. In the line " No sweet ethereal..." is a formal way to say soft or delicate. He uses personification when he says " There is no tenderness in my sweaty nights" this is personification because nights can not sweat. The poem switches moods when in the line "I am too big, too hard, too gross to feel," from useless to disparity. The theme of this poem is some people can't express what they want onto paper.
In conclusion, I can say that Walter Dean Myers is a very inspirational person who puts all his feeling on paper, and summarizes what he see and feel. He works really hard to connect with people through his poems. You can tel;l through his poems that he wants equality for all people. Myers is a black activist. He inspires me to keep going no matter what happens.
